MARY TALKS: Native American History & Culture Trail

Join us online as we kick off the 7th Annual series of Mary Talks!

On Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30pm (Eastern), we will will hear from Lauren McMillan, Ph.D., an alumna from the Class of 2008 who is an assistant professor in the Historic Preservation department at UMW. Dr. McMillan will discuss her students' work in developing a Native American History & Culture Trail

In partnership with nearby King George County, UMW students worked with the Rappahannock Indian Tribe and the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia to research, write, and design interpretive signage for a driving trail through the county. Using multiple lines of evidence--secondary sources, archival documents, archaeological evidence, and oral histories--the students covered the history of Rappahannock and Patawomeck peoples from 10,000 years ago to the present, illustrating the importance of descendant-oriented, collaborative research in modern historic preservation practices. This Mary Talk will examine the Trail and ongoing collaborative research focused on Virginia’s first peoples.
