MARY TALKS Why Debate Matters: Lessons Learned While Arguing

Join us online for the next Mary Talk of the 2021-22 academic year!

On Wednesday, December 15 at 7:30pm, we will will hear from Adrienne Brovero, director of the nationally award-winning debate team at Mary Washington.

In recent years, many have bemoaned the decline in civic--and civil--discourse and debate. At the national political level, dialogue is perceived as often unpleasant and sometimes pointless. At a more local level, school board and city council meetings have devolved into shouting matches. And many a family holiday gathering has taken a turn when political arguments erupt at the table.

Some have deemed “debate” a pejorative term. And yet, thousands of students from the middle school through college levels participate in competitive debate--even during the pandemic, when instruction and competition shifted online. In this Mary Talk, Brovero will discuss what we all can learn from debate--and how to apply those lessons to our national, local, and dinner table discussions.

Note: Online viewing is the only option for this Mary Talk.

We look forward to seeing you online!
