Life After COVID Course

Registration for this course is now closed, but those who would like to be added to the email distribution list (to receive Zoom links for sessions) should email College of Arts and Sciences Dean Keith Mellinger: kmelling@umw.edu

Join us for Life After COVID, a 5-week online summer course where we embrace a forward-looking approach to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The free course is open to everyone – UMW students and incoming students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and the broader community.

As the country continues to move out of the COVID pandemic, it is time to take a critically reflective look at what we have learned as a society. There is no doubt that many have suffered, but after the struggle comes a period of growth and development. What issues were exposed? What did we learn? What needs to change? This summer course will take a critical academic look at the exposed social matters of the last year, providing insights and analysis from a variety of perspectives.

How It Works

Each week, faculty from across the university will broadcast a 30-minute lecture followed by an interactive Q&A session. Lectures begin at 4:00pm EDT on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, starting June 1, 2021. All take place remotely, delivered right to your living room via Zoom or YouTube. All you need is Internet access -- you can even participate from your smartphone!

Read details and descriptions of each lecture here. Students taking this course for credit will have additional required work to complete. Alumni, staff, and anyone else not taking the course for credit will participate in the lectures and the Q&A sessions but will not complete the additional work. Anyone not taking the course for credit may join the course at any time -- even after it's already begun -- up until the last lecture on July 1.

A Suggested Donation & Dollar-for-Dollar Match

As with the COVID-19 in Context course delivered in the summer of 2020, participating faculty and administrators are donating their time and expertise to deliver the lectures in this course so that incoming and continuing UMW students, whose lives were disrupted over the last year, can take the course for credit at no cost.

We hope that you will consider a donation at the time of your registration, helping us defer the technology costs associated with delivering the course to students. Donations made through the registration form are being matched, dollar for dollar, by the Catherine O'Connor Woteki '69 and Tom Woteki Beyond the Classroom Match--your gift will have double the impact!

While our suggested donation of $30 will help significantly, we hope those who are able will consider additional support. All donations beyond those used to offset course costs will go directly into our Beyond the Classroom endowment for student research and learning, a unique fund designed to support the high-impact learning experiences that complement and enhance our liberal arts and sciences curriculum.

Please note: If you require accommodations due to disability-related needs to participate in this course, please contact Dr. Keith Mellinger (kmelling@umw.edu) by Monday, May 24. We will make all effort to accommodate any requests, but please know that some accommodations may take time to implement and we cannot guarantee accommodations will be put in place by the start of the course without advance notice.
